Back to Newsprint

I’ve been drawing on “good” paper for the past 1 ½ years because it seemed like the professional, artistic thing to do. In the distant past I used newsprint — for several reasons: it’s cheap, more eraseable than “good” paper, has a soft effect, and is less stressful than drawing on “good” paper.

Last night, since I had recently bought a new pad of cheap, low-rent newsprint paper, I decided to make it a newsprint night. The difference of the drawing experience was subtle but noticeable and enjoyable. When a drawing doesn’t work, it’s comforting to say “Oh well, it’s just newsprint.”

The 40-minute pose at the end of the drawing session..

A 20-minute portrait with dramatic lighting. Thank you Mr. Muse.

A short pose with dramatic lighting — exaggerated in the face area to hide the artist’s drawing failures.
