Not Exaggerating

There are imperfections in this drawing — things I got wrong. The face isn’t exactly right. Perhaps the forearm is too long. Maybe the knee is a little too large. But if you’re thinking I exaggerated the hair, you guessed wrong. That’s the one thing I got right. This was the last pose of the night, a 40-minute pose. Most of the artists leave before the last pose or two, leaving just a handful of us for the last hour of drawing. I’m not going to tell them, but just so you know, the best poses of the night are the last two. Keep that in mind if you attend a drawing group.

Last pose of the night. The original drawing includes the entire figure, but cropping accentuates the hair.

Partially finished drawing of the next-to-last pose (a 20-minute pose).

Sometimes a different drawing style appears in the first couple of strokes and I just go with it. This usually happens on shorter poses when I know I won’t have time to be too careful. I should have made more hair visible behind her, but these things happen when you’re in a hurry. And when you’re not Michelangelo.
