Portrait Failure

The stacks of Tuesday Night drawings are getting hard to deal with, so I’ve been trashing the ones that fall between “almost OK” and “very bad.” I had trash plans for this portrait, then decided to see if I could do anything to help it. I realized that I had been too careful with it, too delicate with the shading, and too afraid to make a mistake. It was a 20 minute pose, and surely, I thought, I can draw a decent likeness in 20 minutes, if I’m careful. As a result it was wimpy and lifeless. I figured “I’m going to throw it away anyway, so just get a big, soft charcoal stick and mess around with it.” It’s still not great, but it is sooo much better than it was. I should have scanned a “before” version to compare, but that would not help my drawing reputation at all.
