Flowing Hair

I like poses that present extreme foreshortening and unusual views. That’s why I often draw from a position that most artists avoid — to the extreme left of the modeling stand. Shadows are more pronounced on that side of the model in this studio, due to the lighting setup. Also, when there’s less of the body and face showing, and mostly hair, it’s a lot easier to claim the drawing looks like the model.

Flowing Hair

More flowing hair — a rough sketch made during the pose, with plans to add shading later.

Shading added the next day.

Two one-minute sketches.

I started to skip this pose, then decided to draw, after the time was halfway gone.

Another extreme foreshortening view from my position in the room.

If I don’t like the extreme foreshortened view, I sometimes draw standing up so I can look down and see more of the model’s pose. Egon Shiele used to draw from a platform that was higher than the model.
