Another Collaboration
In early December, Southwest Contemporary sent out a Call for Artists to submit art for an exhibit related to the theme Bodies//Boundaries:
“Bodies//Boundaries investigates our personal and cultural negotiations of shared spaces. We seek to explore the dueling impulses—to contain contagion and to find human connection — that have been heightened by the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the escalating digital mediation of our interpersonal experiences, the pandemic has reminded us of the vulnerability of our bodies and our most primary needs.”
Accepted works are to be featured in the April issue of the magazine. Since the theme seemed vague and broad enough, I submitted three pieces, including this collaboration with Karl Whitaker. The submission was rejected, but that’s how it goes — it is what it is — at the end of the day. . . blah blah blah.
Southwest Contemporary did send a nice rejection letter, something that other competitions don’t always bother to do:
“Thank you for your submission to the Southwest Contemporary Bodies//Boundaries call for entry! While your submission was not selected for the Spring 2021 issue, we enjoyed learning more about your artistic practice and familiarizing ourselves with your work. The primary reason we did not make selections was due to thematic alignment issues. Many of the artworks we viewed in the last few weeks were profoundly rich, but they were just not the right fit for this particular issue.”
This means I’ll be going into serious negotiations with A Gallery Somewhere for an exhibit later this year, after publicly-attended gallery openings are allowed again.
